Type Locality and Naming

Type location is in Drumgam-Kelnar area. [Original Publication: Singh, R., Jamwal, J.S. and Singh, K., 2000. Geology of Part of Warwan Valley, Doda District, Kashmir Himalaya. Jour. Geol. Soc. India. 56, 651-659].

Synonym: An earlier Kashmir column had a "Wumuh Fm" in Jurassic; but not mentioned in the 2021 compilation by Bhargava and Singh.


Lithology and Thickness

Sandy claystone. Based on lithology and the faunal assemblage, Drumgam Formation has been divided informally into two members viz. Member A and Member B. Member A comprising greywacke, black shale and gritty sandstone. Member B consisting of sandy calcareous shale and is correlatable with the lower Umia Fm of Kachchh and Spiti Fm shale of Spiti valley. These rocks show NW-SE strike, with gentle dips, while the latter has very steep dips towards NE.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Drumgam Formation shows an angular unconformable relationship with the underlying Wuyan Fm.

Upper contact

Not Available. Regionally, the next units are Pliocene (Hirpur Fm of Karewa Gr)

Regional extent

Drumgam Formation occurs as isolated outliers resting over Wuyan Fm. These outliers have been traced intermittently for a strike length of over 10 km with an average width of 1 km lying in the crestal part of the Great Himalayan Range at altitudes ranging from 3700 m to above 6000 m.

Belemnopsis gerardi, Belemnopsis sp. ammonoids, pelecypods and crinoids.
